STUDY ABROAD: OVERVIEW

Hopkins Summer Study Abroad Programs are courses that complement the Hopkins curriculum. Some programs include courses taught by JHU faculty abroad while others are sponsored by a Hopkins department. Programs range between 3-6 credits and grades will appear on the Hopkins transcript and be calculated into the GPA. Cost varies by program and applications must be submitted to the Office of Study Abroad. HOPKINS SUMMER IRELAND: PHOTOGRAPHING THE BURREN

The Burren College of Art, located on Ireland’s Atlantic coast, serves as the base for this six-credit humanities photography program. While there, students explore a land of jaw dropping beauty and history: with rocks and seas, ancient forts and megalithic tombs, rare flowers and marine life. Students will stay in a cozy Irish cottage in the village of Ballyvaughn, where evenings are filled with music, poetry and storytelling. They will photograph abandoned mansions in the countryside, tramp along windswept lanes on a Gaelic speaking island with its resident shipwreck, experience the old Irish ways at the Spancil Hill horse fair, meet renowned Irish photographers, explore the unique Burren landscape with a naturalist and experience the delights of Galway and Dublin. Fundamentals of the Digital SLR, Photoshop and printing are covered and lectures on the documentary and fine art traditions in photography inspire student projects. Students work one-on-one with their instructors to develop a photographic series that will be shown in a final exhibition at the BCA. Each student will be given a Nikon Digital D3000 SLR to use while in Ireland. Students should bring a laptop computer. Students of all majors and levels are welcome

HOPKINS SUMMER SOUTH AFRICA: PUBLIC HEALTH CAPE TOWN

Eligibility: 3.0 GPA, Open to All Majors. Some prior Exposure to Public Health Studies is recommended.

Experience first-hand the public health system of South Africa in the vibrant multicultural city of Cape Town. Students will take 2 public health courses. One will be a discussion of Public Health in South Africa, including material on the political climate, health care services, and the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This course will be taught by a faculty member of the University of Cape Town School of Public Health and Family Medicine. The other will be a community-based learning course which includes reflection sessions and a 3-day a week internship with a local NGO. This component will be co-facilitated by an experienced community liaison and Ms. Lisa Folda of the PHS Program office. All transportation to and from these sites will be arranged for the students. In addition to class time, each course will include local speakers and field trips that build on the content of the course, such as a township tour, a trip to Parliament, and local museums as relevant. Students will stay in a residence hall on the UCT campus in Rondebosch, and will be provided with the majority of their meals. Prior to departure, students will participate in a seminar here at Homewood that covers readings relevant to the experience. The group will meet once a week for 6 sessions.Public Health Studies majors can use the CommunityBased Learning course to satisfy their Applied Experience requirement.

HOPKINS FILM AND MEDIA STUDIES IN BOLOGNA, ITALY

Eligibility: 3.0 GPA, Film & Media Studies major or minor

Students on this program will attend the Cinema Ritrovato Film Festival in the charming, medieval university town of Bologna, Italy. Participants will have the opportunity to meet with filmmakers and other professionals in the film industry, visit the Cineteca's film preservation labs, and learn about Italian film and film restoration. Students will be living in centrally located apartments in Bologna. This will be a 3 week program for a total of 3 Film & Media Studies or H credits. No Italian language background is necessary. Open to Film & Media Studies majors and minors and led by Professor Linda DeLibero.

Gain Italian proficiency in the vibrant city of Bologna. An important cultural, artistic and culinary center, Bologna is home to the University of Bologna which was founded in 1088. In 2000 the city was declared European Capital of Culture and in 2006, a UNESCO "City of Music". Bologna is a short distance from Florence, Venice and Rome.

HOPKINS POLITICAL SCIENCE IN BOLOGNA, ITALY

The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers (3 credits). Taught on the JHU SAIS Bologna campus, the first part of this course is both a theoretical introduction on the most important theories about war and peace as well as an historical analysis on the evolution of the international system. The course examines the most important competing theories about the nature, structure, working, and transformation of international politics in the modern and contemporary eras. The second part is an analysis of the foreign policy of six great powers (Britain, China, France, Germany, and USA) in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

Italian Politics (3 credits). Also taught on the JHU SAIS campus, this course will introduce students to Italian politics. It will provide an overview of the major historical determinants of Italy's societal and institutional structure. These notions will constitue the frame of reference for understanding Italy's political institutions such as the electoral system, the parliament and the executive, the main political players, and the media. Particular attention will be given to placing the analysis of Italian political system in a comparative context. Topics covered will include Stereotypes and Puzzles About Italian Politics and Society, Italian Type of Democracy, and Elections, Campaigning and Voting Behavior.

HOPKINS NEUROSCIENCE IN SALAMANCA, SPAIN

Eligibility:3.0 GPA. Open to rising junior and senior Neuroscience students. No Spanish language background necessary.

Students will learn about Neuroscience and Spanish culture by becoming immersed in the vibrant life of Salamanca, a vibrant city rich in history and culture. Students will take 2 courses for a total of 6 credits on this program. The first course, the Neurobiology of Hearing, focuses on sound processing, including current research topics in Auditory Neuroscience, including synaptic physiology, neural circuitry, acoustics, physiology, and behavior. This course will count for an upper-level Neuroscience elective. Students also will take a Spanish for Science Students course for 3 credits focusing on Spanish language, culture, and science and medical terminology that might be useful in the context of medical practice or research. Students will live in a residencia, which includes a meal plan. To be eligible, students must have a 3.0 GPA and be a Neuroscience major, and junior or senior standing. No Spanish language is required. There is a dual application process for this program; students must complete both a Hopkins application and a program application. Applications for Summer 2013 are due to the Office of Study Abroad on March 1.

HOPKINS SUMMER GREECE: ENVIRONMENTAL PHOTOJOURNALISM AND OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP

Based at Hopkins (3 weeks) and in Greece (3 weeks), students will take two courses; Environmental Photojournalism in Greece and Environmental Education and Outdoor Leadership. In the first course, students will blend media/communication theory and photographic practice into their daily schedule. Students will identify an environmental narrative, document their particular story through photojournalism, and write a final paper analyzing their final project using the sustainability science and visual representation conceptual frameworks covered throughout the course. In the second course, students will study leadership and education theory and learn the practical skills necessary for a successful and safe study abroad trip to Greece for the remaining three weeks. In Greece, students will be given the opportunity to apply their skills to help coordinate, lead, teach and evaluate limited and supervised day trips during the course of the program. The course will also engage in cooperative learning through outdoor class projects and activities. Students must be physically fit and comfortable living in rustic conditions as the program involves a high level of physical activity and living in close quarters. Students will spend 10 days living on a yacht that will transport them from Athens to the island of Corfu with several island stops along the way. They will spend the remaining time in Corfu. The program is open to students of all majors and is led by Alexios Monopolos in the GECS department.
