Susan Bitto, Administrative Manager | SOM DOM Infectious Disease (exempt) “Hello, my name is Susan Bitto. I have been with JHU for 6 years. In my current role, I am an Administrative Manager in the SOM DOM, Division of Infectious Diseases. I am interested in joining the Staff Advisory Council because of the many years of experience that I have had within the institution, growing from a Sr. Administrative Coordinator role, to where I currently am now, I would like to be a part of advocating for those wanting to be on a similar path, or a different path. Creating more collaboration among divisions within the departments or at schools, as well as collaborative and team building opportunities across the entire university, whether it be a administrative conference, or a program that allows administrative professionals to come together and share their expertise. I want to be able to lend my voice to change withing JHU and use my experience here to help others and make it better.” |
Margaret (Molly) Bowen, Sr. Communications Manager | SOM DOM Infectious Disease (exempt) “Hello, my name is Molly Bowen. I’ve been with Johns Hopkins School of Medicine for 9+ years, and was with the School of Public Health for around 4 years during 1999-2003. I’m currently the Senior Communications Manager for the Division of Infectious Diseases, and I’ve been in this role for nearly 3 years. Prior to my joining the ID Division, there was no communications function for largest division in the School of Medicine, and, with nearly 500 people, there was, and remains, a lot of work to be done. Fortunately, I now oversee a team of 3 direct reports who are absolutely stellar. There are a number of reasons why I joining the JHU Staff Advisory Council appeals to me, but I think my primary driving interest stems from the community-building role that I, and our team, serve. The overarching goal of my job is to expand knowledge and understanding of the work across the tripartite mission, and to convey and really celebrate the impact that our folks are having in the world. And that can be a challenge, given the division’s size–it’s a great problem to have! The daily brass tacks of my job aren’t terribly glamorous–the days are filled with really actively listening to needs and wishes (of faculty and staff), distilling them into actionable projects, collaborating on ideas, developing creative ways to communicate, developing production schedules, tracking down a thousand details, and assessing how we did. But it’s kind of a means to an end for me personally and professionally: Every day I get to learn something new or meet someone with whom I’ve not connected before. It’s a very communal environment, and the work is fascinating. If the Staff Advisory Council will have me, I would love to collaborate on expanding that connectedness and curiosity. All JHU staff should feel excited to come to work knowing that their (often unglamorous 🙂 ) contributions are critical to our collective mission.” |
Jamie Braun, Administrative Manager | SOM Neuro BIOS (exempt) “Hello, my name is Jamie Braun. I have been with JHU for 10 years. In my current role as the BIOS Division Administrative Manager in the SOM Neurology Department, I bring a unique perspective and pathway to my position. I joined BIOS as an administrative coordinator supporting the director, Dr. Daniel Hanley, and the BIOS division. As BIOS grew from a neurology division of about 18 staff members managing our own grants and trials to an organization of more than 50 with external colleagues and collaborators, I have had the opportunity to grow professionally with the organization. Coming from a non-academic business background, I transitioned into the academic environment and promoted to Senior Administrative Coordinator when BIOS expanded to about 30 staff members. I managed the division’s relocation from on-campus to downtown Baltimore. Now, as the BIOS division administrative manager, I work closely with faculty leaders to manage the operation and staff of nearly 60 and I am involved in the management of more than 20 grants totaling more than $30 million in awards. I oversee the administrative core; manage recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding of staff and provide financial oversight of grant funds, endowments and gift accounts. I serve as a resource to division staff regarding both BIOS and Hopkins policies and procedures. Additionally, I manage our computer assets, tracking deployment and lifecycle, and purchasing new systems as needed. I plan, coordinate, and oversee small meetings to large scientific conference events for the division. These activities allow me to interact daily with staff, learning not only about their immediate job tasks but also about processes that work well or are frustrating to navigate within the vast information repository of JH information. Joining the Staff Advisory Council would allow me to share my insights and contribute to the broader community, leveraging my unique experiences and perspective to help improve our institution. Additionally, this opportunity will significantly enhance my professional growth by expanding my leadership skills, broadening my network, and deepening my understanding of institutional operations and governance.” |

I am passionate about fostering a positive work environment and believe my time spent working with staff at all levels would be an asset to the council. I am committed to representing the interests of all staff members and advocating for their needs. I look forward to the opportunity to serve on the Staff Advisory Council.” |
Jenna (Jennifer) Los, Sr. Research Program Manager | SOM DOM Pulmonary (exempt) “Hello, my name is Jenna Los. I have been with JHU for ~22.5 years. In my current role, I am a Sr. Research Program Manager in the SOM DOM Pulmonary department. I also manage the finances for our team. I am interested in joining the Staff Advisory Council because I believe I can bring a wealth of institutional knowledge that could help in discussions about decisions and policy making that affects staff. I have a lengthy history at JHU, moving up from a lab tech to my current role across several different departments. I know what concerns entry level employees as well as managers. I would be very interested to hear from non-research staff and other departments, to bring our diverse backgrounds together to make meaningful changes that make JHU an even better place to work.” |
Ursula Pajak, CO Sr. Medical Office Coordinator | SOM Oto Clinic (non-exempt) “In my current role, I am a CO Sr. Medical Office Coordinator in the SOM Oto Clinic department and have been working with 2 very busy doctors. I am interested in joining the Staff Advisory Council because I love my job and am passionate in helping patients and also my department to possibly make things better, which includes helping others to understand that Oto is a specialty unto itself. We are not like other departments and it would be great for others to not generalize us. While our doctors are ENTs, they are so much more and each division has their own speciality, which also includes our Speech Language Team, and billing, auths, scheduling are broken down for each speciality. Auths are a special concern and I humbly feel should be handled by a separate/specialized financial clearance team, dedicated to understanding Oto, and may help save our department money, which may help create more money for the department. Since I have been working with Otolaryngology since 2018 within JH and another hospital, with some of our JH doctors, which includes starting with scheduling at the front desk and working my way into other roles, I feel I have a unique understanding. Thank you for your consideration.” |

I started here in the late 90s in the lowest of the laboratory technical staff positions. I am currently a Laboratory Manager in the Retrovirus Laboratory. I am Past-President of the Johns Hopkins Black Faculty and Staff Association (BFSA), 2023 JHU Diversity Leadership Council – Diversity Awardee and 2023 BFSA Indispensable Roles of Blacks Exhibit Inductee. I am a proven advocate for equitable pay and opportunities for staff at Hopkins. I was the driving force behind getting the Juneteenth holiday celebrated as a paid holiday at JHU as wells, requesting mandatory unconscious bias training for supervisors/manager, bringing back the career resource center (now called the Center for Staff Life Design), and increasing/changing tuition benefits. As a member of the Black Faculty and Staff Associate Executive Board, I continue to serve and have meetings with Hopkins leadership to advocate for policy and procedural changes that will hopefully cause a cultural swift in the fabric/workforce of Johns Hopkins.” |
Christy Smith, CO Genetic Counselor III | SOM Genetics Medical Genetics Clinic (exempt) “My name is Christy Smith and I am a clinical genetic counselor in the Department of Genetic Medicine. I have been at JHU for almost 9 years. I am interested in joining the Staff Advisory Council because I would like to be in a leadership position within JHU to influence change within our department and institution-wide. I have actively provided feedback through Glint surveys and to my direct management; however I have felt that change has been somewhat stagnant and I would like to become more involved in influencing this change. As a genetic counselor, I feel that I have a unique perspective to provide as a mid-level provider, and would love to network more with others across the university. Furthermore, I have a personal interest in diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. As part of the Maryland and DC Society of Genetic Counselors (MDCGC) I have been involved in the DEIJ Subcommittee since it’s inception four years ago, and have served as Chair for the last two years. Additionally, I have been part of the J.E.D.I. Stewardship Committee within the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) for the past three years, including serving as Vice Chair this past year and will serve as Chair in 2025. In terms of my own personal skills, I am able to think of innovative solutions to problems and work well within a team, particularly including diverse perspectives and backgrounds. I am very adept at networking and being resourceful in identifying other individuals/groups who can further mobilize initiatives. I would be honored to serve on the SAC as a voice for the university.” |
Christina Steg, CO Clinical Nurse Manager | SOM OB GYN Bay Gynecology Obstetrics Bay (exempt) “My name is Christina Steg RN BSN, I have been with the JHSOM the last 5 and a half years. 6 years will be in Jan 2025. My current role is the Clinical Nurse Manager of the White Marsh GYN OB team. (SOM OB GYN Bay Gynecology Obstetrics Bay department). I am interested in joining the Staff Advisory Council because here at Wm OB GYN we have seen some missed opportunities to recognize employees for going above and beyond. Increasing employee moral with recognition is important for retention. After receiving 2.0% raise for all employees last fiscal year, the team was very upset and felt devalued. I.e.: If the person sitting next to you scores a 3 on their evaluation, meeting expectation, another person in the same job description, goes above and beyond, they both received 2.0% raise; this has caused disharmony in the office. Success Factors becomes irrelevant in this case. I would love to be a part of the Outpatient offices at JHSOM having a formal recognition program like Applause, Rose award, Daisy award, etc. these types of recognition programs exist in the entity and could easily be implemented. Positive change to retain employees is important for each person in the health care system. Thank you for the consideration.” |
Christy Swain, Program Administrator | SOM DOM Bay General Internal Medicine (exempt) “Hello, my name is Christy Swain. I have been with JHU for 6 years. In my current role, I am the Program Administrator in the SOM DOM Bay General Internal Medicine department with a dual role supporting both the GIM Division and the Palliative Care Program. I am interested in joining the Staff Advisory Council because I have a skill set that aligns well with problem identification and resolution. In my dual role I am the “go to” for both teams that I currently support and I have insight into the issues/concerns from the different types of staff on these teams (i.e., physicians, administrative staff, nurses, social work, chaplaincy). My teams cover both inpatient and outpatient clinical services, as well as education and research. Having an opportunity to learn more about institution-wide issues and how we may contribute to positive change also interests me.” |
Christina Tarleto, Medical Training Program Manager | SOM Em Med General Administration (exempt) “Hello, my name is Christina Tarleton. I have been with JHU for 14 years. In my current role, I am a Medical Training Program Manager in the JHU School of Medicine Emergency Medicine department. I am interested in joining the Staff Advisory Council to further their mission of advocating for staff and being an upstanding liaison with University Leadership. My exceptional communication and interpersonal skills have enabled me to effectively collaborate with members at all levels, ensuring seamless coordination within our team and between departments. I like to work in dynamic environments where problem-solving is key in order to address challenges and to optimize efficiency. One of my core values is a deep commitment to diversity, inclusion and representation within the admissions landscape. I am dedicated to thinking of ways to create more accessible paths for underrepresented communities in education. I believe in the importance of a holistic recruitment & admissions approach that considers not only academic achievements but also individual experiences, backgrounds and potential for growth. I would like to be able to translate this into the SAC in order to advocate for positive change amongst the University staff. I would also like to, along with other members of the SAC, promote initiatives that enhance staff well-being, career development and recognition, as well as collaborate with University Leadership to address challenges.” |
Christina Taylor, CO Medical Assistant | SOM OB GYN Bay Gynecology Obstetrics Bay (non-exempt) “Hello, my name is Christina Taylor. I have been with Johns Hopkins University for 4 years and previously worked at Johns Hopkins Bayview for 8 years. My current role is medical assistant with OB/GYN at the outpatient offices at White Marsh. I am seeking a place in the staff advisory council because I believe that I and many other MAs in my team and others feel like they have no voice and no place to turn to, to express their feelings about current JHU policies and the lack of forward momentum in our role specifically. I have advocated for and continue to advocate for advancement in training for our role, as well as keeping up with the competitive pay that is offered at similar offices and locations around Baltimore and Maryland. To ensure that our patient’s receive the best quality care from dedicated individuals, we need to keep up with market and what other offices offer to those who fill my role specifically. I do hope that my nomination is accepted so that I may continue to advocate for those in my role and shed light on some of the specific challenges that my role faces at work.” |
Tony (Anthony) Teano, Communications Specialist | SOM Neuro Cognitive Neurology (exempt) “An alumnus of JHU KSAS’ MLA program, I have been employed with JHU for close to 8.5 years; currently, I am a Communications Specialist in the SOM Department of Neurology (Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center). In this role, most of my work can be done remotely; however, in the past, I have worked on-campus as a Patient Services Coordinator at EB and as a Sr. Administrative Coordinator at Bayview. Beyond the scope of my job, I collaborated with leaders to develop a training program for clinicians to be more aware of the health disparities and concomitant needs of LGBTQ+ elders; we won a Diversity Innovation Grant to create it. Additionally, in 2021, I was humbled to be honored with Geriatrics’ Mason F. Lord Award of Excellence for Creativity & Innovation, as well as the SOM ODI’s Pride Achievers Award. While I am very grateful for past accolades, I feel they are only indicators of my ability to collaborate in the future. Some of my hallmarks are good listening skills, creativity and innovation, and envisioning workable solutions to real problems. Moreover, with a great sense of humility, I am an advocate for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for all marginalized people, and I have served on the JHU Diversity Leadership Council (DLC) as co-chair of the Staff Access and Inclusion Committee, where I have been advocating for improvement to the institution’s capacity for welcoming and belonging initiatives. I will rotate off the DLC soon, and I would like to continue work on staff and diversity topics such as these and other priorities with the Staff Advisory Council. In summation, I ask for your vote, and I am confident that I will be able listen to your concerns and work to find solutions. I offer a valuable, experienced, and an informed voice representing the interests of diverse staff working in a variety of modalities. We’re 100% in this together. Let’s make positive change for all of us.” |
Shanea Thomas, Sr. Medical Office Coordinator | SOM Ortho Bay Clinic (non-exempt) “Hello, my name is Shanea Thomas. I have been with JHU for over 12 years. In my current role, I am a Sr. Medical Office Coordinator in the SOM Ortho Bay Clinic department. I am interested in joining the Staff Advisory Council because “I believe I would be a valuable addition to the Staff Advisory Council, given my diverse experience within this institution. Over the years, I’ve worked across multiple departments and held various positions, including leadership roles, at different locations. This has given me a well-rounded understanding of the challenges faced by both clinical and administrative staff on a daily basis. I have had the opportunity to engage with staff from all areas, including parking, security, environmental services, and more, allowing me to gain insight into their unique concerns. Additionally, I regularly interact with patients, both in and out of the clinic, addressing any issues they may encounter and helping resolve them efficiently. This broad perspective, combined with my commitment to improving staff and patient experiences, would allow me to contribute meaningfully to the board.” |
Monica Vladut-Talor, Sr. Research Specialst | SOM Pat Immunology (exempt) “I have been with Johns Hopkins University for 37 years during which time I have seen a lot of growth, many new changes, constructions and developments. In my current role as a Senior Research Specialist in the SOM Patho Immunology department, I am involved with and coordinate many research projects in the lab, help with grant writing and mentor students. I am interested in joining the Staff Advisory Council to be able to contribute tin making some positive changes in the department and university level. I believe the staff in the School of Medicine may have different needs as the staff in other departments. I also believe many people working in the school of Medicine do not know the Staff Advisory Council exists or what its function is. I hope to bring my extensive knowledge of Hopkins to the Council and help younger Staff understand the culture, requirements and benefits of being a Hopkins employee. Thank you for your consideration.” |

Wendy Wu, Sr. Grants & Contracts Analyst | SOM Cell Bio Cell Biology (exempt) “Hello, my name is Wendy Wu, I have been with JHU for 29 years. In my current role, I am a Sr. Grants & Contracts Analyst in the SOM Cell Biology department. I am interested in joining the Staff Advisory Council because I am excited by the JHU Leadership vision for staff, but I know that the day to day needs of the departments typically overrule these ideas. Payroll needs to be run, there are grant deadlines, reports are due, budgets are limited. I would like to offer my lifetime of experience, boundless creativity, positive attitude, and deep caring for people, and for JHU, in service to make us a happier workforce, and therefore a stronger institution.” |
