Admittedly, while reading about the Staff Advisory Council and feeling excited about working amongst individuals who are innovative enough to establish such a committee, I was unsure if my skillset would be enough to be considered. However, when researching what this committee stands for, surprisingly someone bought it to my attention that I currently am already am advocate on a smaller scale for some of the shared goals of the Staff Advisory Council. I was informed by some of my team members that I my presence creates safe spaces for my colleagues to voice their challenges, aspirations and successes. My name is Claire Runquist, I’m the Senior Sustainability Specialist for Engagement and Community Building within the Office of Climate & Sustainability. I work in what I call the “fuzzy” people-focused side of sustainability, rather than the strictly data-focused side. My role in the Office of Climate & Sustainability is unique because it offers me the opportunity to work with staff across many divisions and in many different contexts, from helping event planners think through how they can plan green events, to collaborating with Hopkins Dining on planning collaborative opportunities to engage students around sustainable food. I feel that even though I’ve been at Hopkins for a short time, I have been able to make many staff connections that would serve me well on the Staff Advisory Council. While I am relatively new to JHU (I joined in March 2024), I am passionate about shared governance and making our workplace the best it can be, and was involved in a shared governance mentorship program at a previous university I worked at. My interest in joining the Staff Advisory Council stems from my desire to help create an inclusive and healthy workplace. Personally, some of my recent life experiences have given me new perspectives on types of support that may be helpful. I am a relatively new parent and exploring the landscape of navigating available resources and support for things like lactation, childcare while working, and flexibility due to child illness has been really eye-opening and I want to pay it forward and help advocate for ways to make this major life transition even easier for others. I hope you’ll consider voting for me, and whether you do or not, I’m always happy to connect and see how we could collaborate (especially when it comes to climate and sustainability).” |
